Brush Fire – Heckscher State Park

At 1605 on Monday, June 27, Great River Fire Department was activated for an outside fire in the vicinity of field 8 of Heckscher State Park. Upon arrival, the crew of Engine 3-9-6 found a working brush fire having already consumed a 20′ x 20′ area. The crew pulled a 1 3/4″ hand line and extinguished the fire quickly. West Sayville Fire Department Brush 3-10-10 was on scene and assisted with extinguishing hot spots. The origin looked to be hot coals dumped in the brush.

GRFD Responds to MVA

At approximately 2030 hours GRFD was activated for an MVA south of the toll booths at Heckscher State Park. Upon arrival, PD had removed and secured the driver. GRFD secured the vehicle and the incident was declared under control shortly thereafter.

MVA with Negative PI & Vehicle Extrication at SCFA

On May 11, 2011 while gearing up for extrication training at the SCFA, Great River FD was activated for a MVA involving two vehicles at the corner of River Road and Woodhollow Road. Great River responded with a full crew including Rescue 394, Engine 392 and 398. Exchange Ambulance was on scene with two ambulances.

After clearing the scene, Great River FD continued on to the SCFA for MVA and extrication training.

Fire Island Pines Blaze

At 10:36 pm on May 20th, the Great River Fire Department was requested to the scene of a working structure fire involving two homes on the Fire Island Pines. Great River responded with fire boat 3-9-26 with a crew of 4 and a pilot. The fire was contained just before midnight. Despite high winds, departments on scene were able to protect the surrounding residences. Additional departments included Fire Island Pines, Cherry Grove FD, Bayport FD, Sayville FD, East Islip FD, Sayville EMS, and Exchange EMS. A good job by all. Stay safe.

Vehicle Fire 1/17/09

Great River was activated at 4:03pm on 1-17-09 for a vehicle fire adjacent to field 10 in Heckscher State Park. 3-9-94 confirmed fully involved. The crew of first due engine 3-9-2 under command of 3-9-31 and direction of 3-9-50 immediately pulled 1 3/4″ jump line and extinguished the blaze within minutes. Other apparatus on scene included engine 3-9-6 and mass personnel carrier 3-9-8.
